Frank Mayorga and I left flagstaff at 6:30 on the 5th and rode 500 miles to just north of Salt Lake. These pictures (maybe, I'm still trying to master the placement of pictures) are of Frank and I at Marble Canyon. As we descended toward Fredonia from Jacob's Lake Frank experienced the first "OH SHOOT" of the trip, testing the braking abilities of his BMW. Once at the bottom of the hill the wind started and boy did it blow. Nearing Nephi on hwy 89 we passed a dairy/manure/compost business and the aroma became not only pungent, it became particulate as well. You haven't lived until you have been in a manure shower. On the freeway in Salt Lake Frank experienced the second "OH SHOOT" of the trip, and found out how effective his hearing protection is. A Utah DPS officer was going full tilt down the high speed lane with lights and siren and nosed up behind Frank to pass him. Frank didn't hear him and didn't move over for about 2 miles. I thought that the DPS officer was going to put him into the wall. When Frank saw him he promply had a klong (sudden rush of sh*t to the heart) and moved over. It was all quite entertaining, If you weren't Frank. (and Frank will endorse the earplugs)
At the end of the day we both felt like we had been beaten regularly by an old toilet seat. However the sights going up hwy 89 were worth the punishment. If you haven't taken time to really look at the rock ridge north of the Gap, soak in the colors of Marble Canyon or enjoy the unique personalities of the small towns along 89, you need to. I've traveled this stretch many many times and still find it fascinating, especially by motorcycle. The smells and the elements really make it more real. Ok, the wind was a little much.
